Shri K Venkatappa was a great artist, born in 1886 at Mysore. He studied in Fine Arts at Chamarajendra Technical Institute, Mysore from 1902 to 1908 and later advanced study in Fine Arts and Crafts, Calcutta under the guidance of Percy Brown and Abhanindranath Tagore from 1909 to 1916. He studied Veene under the guidance of VeenaSheshanna and his disciple Sri Rama SwamyIyengar. He was well versed in Plaster of Paris relief works. His depiction of NalwadiKrishnarajaWadeyar on Ivory and decoration of MysuruAmbavilas Durbar Hall, and his landscape paintings of Ooty and Kodaikanal in different moods and seasons are classic by themselves in that class of art. He was an expert in line drawings also. He expired in 1965.
Since K Venkatappa was a Court Artist during the reign of Mysore Maharajas, erstwhile Government of Karnataka started an Art Gallery in his name for exhibiting the works Foundation for this Gallery was laid in 1967 by then Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri. S Nijalingappa later on Gallery was inaugurated by former Central Education Minister Dr.NoorullaHussain in 1975 Ground floor of the Gallery has exhibits of Sri. K Venkatappa.
